Who Is the Therapist’s Therapist? How Mental Health Professionals and Doctors Cope with Stress.
WATCHThey Listen to Us... but Who Listens to Them?
We often turn to therapists and doctors during our most challenging times, seeking their guidance and support. But have you ever wondered: Who do these professionals turn to when they face their own emotional struggles?

Who Helps the Helpers?
Mental health professionals and physicians are not immune to stress, burnout, or emotional fatigue. In fact, their roles often expose them to high levels of psychological strain. A study published in The Lancet revealed that between 25% and 33% of physicians report symptoms of mental ill health. Female physicians, in particular, are at an increased risk of suicide. Similarly, therapists face significant stressors. Research indicates that the way therapists cope with stress can impact their effectiveness and, in maladaptive cases, increase vulnerability to stress reactions.

Addressing the mental health of caregivers requires systemic changes. This includes creating supportive work environments, reducing stigma, and ensuring access to confidential mental health services. Organizations are beginning to recognize this need. For instance, initiatives are underway to develop mental health apps for medical trainees and to implement support programs in medical schools and residency programs.
